Customer Review: Lodge Cast Iron Roaster

I'm trying to love it. I've been buying, using, and enjoying Lodge preseasoned cast iron pieces, but I was initially disappointed when I removed this from the packaging. Unless I was mistaken, but I thought I had carefully researched the size, it was tinier than I had been expecting from the measurements given. Be warned that the 17" in the description includes the handles. Another brand I had researched did say, "handles included", so it would have been nice if Lodge had specified this. The roaster's actual measurements are 14 1/4 x 10 x 2 1/8 inches of usable interior space, the measurements that most concern me.
As for the interior, it is so rough that it snags lint from my cloth or paper towel when I dry the inside of the pan. The interior looks and feels just like new preseasoned cast iron without enamel. It's as if there is no finish inside and somehow I won't be surprised if it begins to rust. It was not easy to clean my roasted potatoes from this rough surface (room temperature potatoes with olive oil in a preheated pan). I had to simmer water in it on the stovetop and then scrape the residue loose with a plastic spatula. This is not what I had envisioned, but I fear it will be my reality each and every time I use this pan! I expected a somewhat smooth matte, enamel finish, not as glassy as the exterior enamel, but not at all rough. One that would release food with little effort as opposed to one that acts as if it requires seasoning on my part.
In spite of its not being what I expected, I WOULD like this pan if only the interior were smoother, but alas, it is what it is. I'm vacillating between a rating of one or two stars. Strangely enough, the description mentions a lid and its knob, which come with the Lodge enameled Dutch Ovens. Perhaps the Dutch Oven description was mistakenly placed with this roaster. While I doubt that the inside is coated, in fairness to Lodge I will quote the paperwork that accompanies it: "There's NO exposed cast iron, even the matte black surfaces are porcelain. No seasoning required." UGH! Why is it so like sandpaper in texture that lint snags on the inside? Why does it look and act like it has no porcelain coating? I think it would make more sense for this pretty roaster to be in need of interior seasoning so that it would eventually not stick.
Description of Lodge Color Enamel 4-1/4-Quart Roaster, Island Spice
This 4.25 Quart color enamel roaster is great for roasting meats as well as vegetables. Lodge color porcelain enamel on cast iron cookware is cast from molten iron in individual sand molds. The porcelain surface eliminates the need to season cast iron. The cast iron vessel has superior heat distribution and retention, evenly heating bottom, sidewalls, and even the lid. Two layers of very hard, glossy porcelain enamel are chip resistant and easy to clean. Hygienic porcelain enamel is non-reactive with food. Knob is oven safe to 400 degrees. Tightly fitting lid seals in moisture and the excellent heat retention reduces the amount of energy needed for cooking.
