Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Lodge Original Finish 12 Inch Iron LidCustomer Review: Well made product, one drawback Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this lid and the 13 1/4" skillet at the same time. I got them, and love them both. The lid fits really well and makes a tight seal with the pan. The self basting points on the inside of the lid work great. Being the inquisitive type, I gently lifted the lid while cooking a pork loin, and looked in to see little droplets of moisture hanging on the points ready to fall like rain. This is an excellent idea, and shows that some thought went into this well made product's design. It should come pre seasoned though, to match the appearance of the pan, but since I'm not that fussy, it is OK.
The one drawback is the handle. Since you need to use good thick potholders with cast iron since it gets hot, the handle on the lid should have had more clearance under it, between the underside of the handle and the lid itself, so you would have room to fit big fingers, and thick potholders/mitts further under the handle. Considering the weight of the lid, the handle is a bit small for sure gripping. I think a mushroom shaped handle might even be better than a loop handle, but that is just my guess. At any rate, a bigger handle would be a nice change.
I recommend this lid to anyone that has a skillet it's size, even with the smallish handle.
Description of Lodge Original Finish 12 Inch Iron LidThis cover provides self-basting spikes on the underside that allow the nutrition and flavor in the steam to drip back onto food. 12 inch diameter lid. Original finish. To season, follow these easy directions - Wash with hot, soapy water and a stiff brush. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Spead a thin coat of solid shortening or vegetable oil over the entire pan including handles and exterior surfaces. Line the lower oven rack with aluminum foil to catch any drippings and preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place cookware upside down on middle rack of oven and bake for 1 hour. Turn off the oven, leaving the cookware in the oven until cool. Your cookware will look slightly brown, instead of the familiar black but it is ready for cooking. It will blacken with cooking.
